In the UK, life expectancy has doubled in the past 200 years and today, around 16% of the population is aged over 65 years.
Here at Canwick House, we recognize that older adults have special nutritional needs that must be met. Unfortunately, both malnutrition and obesity are prevalent in the older population. We find it troubling that these problems are more common in those who are living in care homes or other care institutions. This is why we are committed to preventing both malnutrition and obesity in older adults.
Dietary recommendations for fat, carbohydrate and dietary fibre remain the same for the elderly as they do for the rest of the population. However, as older bodies change, it becomes harder for them to absorb vital nutrients. Moreover, difficulty in chewing and digesting and the decreased ability to taste certain foods can make it more difficult for older adults to maintain a healthy diet. We aim to prevent malnutrition at Canwick House by offering our clients dishes that satisfy, delight and nourish mind, body and soul.
Many of the diseases that affect the elderly can be the result of dietary factors. Through the ageing process, these factors are then compounded by changes that naturally occur in ageing bodies. Dietary fat has shown to be seemingly associated with cancer of the colon, pancreas and prostate. Atherogenic risk factors such as increased blood pressure, blood lips, and glucose intolerance also play a significant role in heart disease. These are all things that can be prevented through a healthy and balanced diet. At Canwick House, we are committed to foods that are fresh, wholesome and promote the health, well-being and vitality of our clients.

For older adults, the benefits of eating well include higher energy levels, resistance to illness, faster recuperation times, improved management of chronic health problems, increased mental acuteness and longevity.
As we age, a healthy diet can be the key to maintaining a positive outlook in life and staying emotionally balanced.
At Canwick House, we choose our daily menus from a variety of colorful fruits and veggies, whole grains and quality proteins to ensure that our clients feel vibrant and stay healthy, inside and out.

Throughout the Coronavirus pandemic, it is important that we protect all our Residents and staff.
Typical symptoms of Coronavirus include a high temperature, a new, continuous cough and a loss or change to sense of smell or taste. These symptoms may progress more in people with weakened immune systems, older people and those with long-term serious health conditions.
With this in mind, we wanted to let you know the steps we are taking in order to minimise the chances of the virus spreading within our Home.
In addition to our high standards of infection control already in place, Canwick House has successfully launched an initiative called “Healthy and Happy”, bringing a new and continued focus on cleaning and sanitisation in direct response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Focussing our efforts on infection control is paramount and we have staff allocated to cleaning within the home including frequent sanitising of all surfaces as well as regular deep cleans. This is monitored with routine audits carried out by the management team.
Our Home provides environment to implement natural ventilation into daily life, with lots of large social areas to enjoy as well as spacious bedrooms with en-suite facilities to allow plenty of personal space for each Resident.
Covid Safe Pods
We have contacted Polymorit to design a garden visiting pod which will enable safe visits for all. This is absolutely exciting news for all and we await February 22nd as the building work commence.
Please watch this space !
You will liaise with the home directly to book an appointment. Visitor code and policy will be made accessible for all to see and agree to.
